What Performance Max is
Performance Max (PMax) is a Google Ads campaign type that uses AI to show your ads across all of Google’s channels from one campaign. You provide goals, budget, creative and signals; Google decides where and when to show ads.
What it needs to work
Bad inputs lead to bad results. If conversions are tracked wrongly, the AI optimizes for the wrong thing.
- Accurate conversion tracking, ideally with values
- A variety of strong creative: images, logos, videos and headlines
- Audience signals such as customer lists and website visitors
- A product feed for e-commerce
- Enough budget and time to learn
Keeping control
Add brand exclusions if you don’t want PMax taking credit for brand searches, use negative keywords at the account level, and exclude low-quality placements. Review search term insights, asset performance and channel reports regularly.
When to use it, and when not
PMax works well for e-commerce and lead-generation businesses with solid conversion data. If you have very little data or need tight control over exactly which searches you appear for, start with Search campaigns and add PMax later.
AI-led advertising ahead
Ad platforms are moving toward fully AI-led campaigns, where advertisers supply goals, data and creative rather than keywords.

- 02AI-generated creative variations at scale
- 03First-party data as the main competitive advantage
