What a core update is
Several times a year Google releases broad core updates that change how it assesses content across the web. They aren’t penalties. Google is re-evaluating which pages are most helpful for each search.
Because of this, there’s rarely a single thing to fix. Recovery comes from making your site genuinely more useful than the pages that overtook it.
Days 1–15: Diagnose the drop
Confirm the timing matches a core update in Google’s Search Status Dashboard, then use Search Console to compare the weeks before and after.
- Which pages lost the most clicks?
- Which queries dropped, and who ranks there now?
- Is the drop site-wide or limited to one section?
- Did anything else change, such as a redesign, migration or tracking issue?
Days 16–45: Improve content quality
Look at the pages that replaced yours and ask honestly why they’re more helpful. Common gaps are depth, first-hand experience, clearer answers and up-to-date information.
Rewrite your most important pages with real expertise: original photos, examples from your own work, clear author information and specific advice. Merge thin pages that cover the same topic, and remove or noindex pages with no value.
Days 46–75: Strengthen trust and experience
Make it easy to see who you are: detailed About and team pages, reviews, credentials, contact details and clear policies. Improve page speed and Core Web Vitals, cut intrusive pop-ups and fix layout shifts.
Earn mentions and links from local and industry sites. Quality matters far more than quantity.
Days 76–90: Monitor and keep going
Track rankings and clicks weekly, but expect gradual change. Google has said sites may not fully recover until a later core update, after its systems reassess the improvements. Keep publishing helpful content in the meantime.
What future updates will reward
Each update pushes further toward first-hand experience and real usefulness, especially as AI-generated content floods the web.
- 01Original insight and experience over rewritten summaries
- 02Clear authorship and real business credentials
- 03Content that satisfies the searcher, measured by behaviour
Questions & answers
Not automatically. Improve pages that have potential, merge overlapping ones and remove only those with no value to users.
Google says it rewards helpful content however it’s produced. Mass-produced, unedited AI content with no original value is a common problem, though.
Rarely on their own. Core updates mainly assess content quality and helpfulness.
Some sites see improvement within weeks; many recover around the next core update, often months later.
